4 Reasons You Should Explore Minsk, But First How to Get the Visa

The first time you heard of Minsk was probably in FRIENDS when David the Scientist Guy told Phoebe that he’s going there, but mistakingly saying it’s in Russia (Season 1 Episode 10), most likely because not so many people would have heard of Belarus then or known where it is.

Even if you’ve heard of Minsk and Belarus before, you probably didn’t hear so many good things about it and wouldn’t be expecting much out of it. At least that was my experience, having been told by a Belarusian how depressing it is and how the country is way behind on living standards or touristic attractions like food quality, accommodation quality, etc. Of course, as a seasoned traveler, I don’t let things I hear determine my judgement of a country before I experience it myself. But I got to say, I was not off to a good start with the visa!

In case you’ve not heard yet:

According to the Presidential Decree, effective from July 27, 2018, foreign citizens of 74 countries* can enter Belarus for up to 30 days** and exit from the territory of Belarus only through the State border checkpoint of the Republic of Belarus “Minsk National Airport”. (Source)

Being a Lebanese passport holder but with a work and residence permit in Germany, I was told that getting into Belarus through Minsk National Airport would be a breeze, as foreigners who want to stay in Minsk for up 30 days without a visa will have to travel through Minsk National Airport… That I wouldn’t even need a formal invitation letter from our Belarusian project partner, as I was visiting for business purposes. But when I came to board my flight to Minsk from my layover in Kiev airport on Ukranian Airlines (UIA), I was told otherwise, and denied boarding… And hence started the longest night of my life, of staying in the airport, trying to sleep unsuccessfully, and researching my options while waiting for updates and help from our Belarusian colleagues.

It turned out that the problem was that I have an EU residence permit, instead of a multiple-entry Schengen visa, although it is of higher status but the airport crew and the passport control have to follow protocol to the letter. Without a multiple-entry Schengen visa in my passport, I needed an invitation form, called Ходатайство, from the Ministry of Education that basically says I can get a visa-on-entry when I arrive to Minsk airport.

Of course, when I first got that form through email, and showed it to UIA boarding crew, and was told I can be granted the right to board, I thought that’s it… That’s the visa. I made it. Little did I know that I would still have to go through the real visa process once I get to Minsk Airport, which involved filling an application (which wasn’t too hard), taking biometric photos with an ancient photo booth that has terrible quality photos (better always carry your own!) which cost 10 BYN (Belarusian Rubbles), almost 4 EUR, and paying 90 EUROS for a single entry visa for a week. They do take payment in Euros, and there is an ATM right there by the desk that gives out multiple currencies just in case. If you’re wondering if that just happened to me because I have a Lebanese passport, it also happened to my colleague that joined our trip, and has a Jamaican passport with even a permanent Spanish residency. Additionally, all arriving visitors will have to purchase obligatory medical insurance that is right at the passport control checkpoint but is quite cheap, and depends on how long you are staying in the country. For example, I had to pay 6 Euros for a week visit. And right when I thought I was ready to go through the control, the office tells me that I have to wait for an officer who will just come ask me some routine questions about my visit. Luckily I had my Belarusian colleague with me and he helped with the translation, because as you will find, not so many officials speak English that well. So basically, unless you’re an EU citizen or has a tourist Schengen visa on your passport, you’ll have to go through this. Keep in mind, that you will also need to be registered at the local police station for the duration of your visit. Your hotel will register you, and when you check out, they’ll provide you with a small piece of paper with your stay dates that you will need to show to passport control when you are exiting the country. Normally, you need to register for the entire duration of your stay if you stay for more than 5 days; in my case, I was staying at the hotel for 5 days, and then for 2 nights on my own, but did not have to re-register since I was leaving on a Sunday, but had I stayed for longer or wasn’t leaving on a Sunday (which is excluded from registration), I would have had to pay a fine.

Now that I finally got through the checkpoint and into Minsk, into my comfortable bed in the nice Monstrasky hotel, let’s get to the fun part!

Here are my 5 reasons of why you should explore Minsk, if hopefully you don’t have to go through such a visa process:

#1 Beautiful and Interesting Architecture

Walking around the city was quite a sight for the eyes. You get to see interesting architecture, without being overwhelmed by high-rise buildings or a lot of “copy-paste” buildings. You’ll come across some beautiful catholic churches, soviet governmental buildings like the KGB, statues spread across the city including the famous Lenin statue, quaint residential buildings, and many other buildings that stood out like the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Belarusian State Circus, the National Library of Belarus (which lights up quite interestingly at night), etc.

One added motive to exploring the city is the cheap and convenient transportation means. You have metros across the city, although I didn’t have the chance to take one. You have taxis on call, which are much more affordable than getting them off the street (your hotel can call them for you, and their details are in the business card in the image gallery below), and also trains that are for as low as 25 cents that can take you outside of the city (but don’t expect anything fancy haha).

#2 Clean Streets with Cozy Quarters

Apparently the city is quite known for its cleanliness, not that I heard about that before I was there. So it was quite a nice surprise! Compared to some very fancy European cities like Paris, there was absolutely no trash or littering anywhere to be found around Minsk. There were no beggars or street vendors pushing touristic stuff on you, so walking around the city is quite a peaceful experience, especially when you go through the quaint cozy quarters that are spread across the city. When you do want to buy memorabilia, you will find them in different cute kiosks or inside the popular local department stores ГУМ (Gum) and ЦУМ (Zum) that have a variety of items.

#3 High Quality but Affordable Arts and Culture

Although I wasn’t in the best mindset, having been sick throughout my trip in Minsk, I still couldn’t miss going to the National Academic Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theatre for The Flying Dutchman Opera. The fact that a ticket only cost 7 EUR didn’t deter me from pushing myself to make it at least through half of the performance, even though I barely understood anything with a German opera and Russian subtitles. The performance was quite professional and high class, and the theater itself was quite beautiful… You can hardly believe the ticket cost less than a movie ticket at a German cinema theater. So you’d have no excuse not to dress up all fancy and spend a classy cultural evening in Minsk!

For another taste of arts and culture, be sure to take a stroll in the arts quarters to enjoy some very colorful murals, one of which a local claimed to be the biggest mural in the world haha, art galleries and exhibitions, and graffitti by Brazilian artists, part of the Brazilian Urban Art festival, Vulica Brasil, that takes place in that street every year.

#4 Delicious Variety of Food

I was also told prior to my visit that food options can be limited in Minsk, but that wasn’t the case at all. There were plenty of highly rated restaurants to choose from, from different cuisines such as Italian, Asian, Georgian… In fact, finding good Belarusian cuisine was the trickiest part, but again, I was very sick and couldn’t manage to explore enough to reach any. Prices also range from cheap to pricey, depending on what you’re looking for. For example, a 3 course lunch at Milano Cafe, with big portions and delicious food, cost 20 BYN (about 10 EUR) which can be pricey by local standards but is quite a catch by Western European standards for examples. Cheaper options are also available, without sacrificing taste and quality, at Georgian restaurants like that seemed quite popular with the youngsters.

عندما تقررت رحلتي الى سنغافورة، ازددت حماسا لقربها من ماليزيا... علمت حينها أنها الفرصة المثالية لأزورها إذ سمعت عنها كثيراُ وكانت على قائمة البلدان التي أنوي زيارتها لأنها لا تتطلب تأشيرة سياحة (فيزا)! هههه قد لا يكون دافعاً قوياً بالنسبة لمعظمكم، ولكن كلبنانية مقيمة في السعودية، الحصول على تأشيرة سياحة هو صداع أحاول تجنبه قدر المستطاع

تأشيرتي إلى سنغافورة كانت بمنتهى السهولة، بفضل دعم مكتب السياحة السنغافوري في دبي، وكانت مدة رحلتي فيها 4 أيام. ومن مطار شانغي في سنغافورة، بدأت رحلتي الى كوالالمبور، ماليزيا! قضيت أول يوم عند أشهر معلم سياحي في كوالالمبور، برجي بتروناس التوأمين... لا يمكنكم زيارة كوالالبمور بدون أن تأخذوا صورة تذكارية أمام البرجين، وإلا لن تعد رحلتكم السياحية حقيقية هههه

ولإكمال تجربتكم السياحية التقليدية، عليكم بأخذ جولة في المدينة على باص الهوب-أون-هوب-أوف والذي يتوقف على أكثر من (20) محطة تصلكم بأكثر من (40) معلمٍ سياحي، توقفت أنا عند بعضها،مثل: الحي الصيني الذي لم يكن بجمال ونظافة الحي الصيني في سنغافورة، الحي الهندي الذي لم يكن مثيراً للاهتمام، وشارع العرب الذي يحتوي على العديد من المطاعم والمقاهي العربية التي تجذب السياح العرب... ولكن، صراحةً، انا لست من محبي السياحة الاعتيادية... في سفري، أحب الاستكشاف والمغامرات والانخراط بأسلوب حياة "أهل البلد" وعاداتهم ... قضاء ساعات في المجمعات والتسوق والكافيهات ليس أبدا على لائحة النشاطات التي استمتع بها، وخاصة في السفر. لذلك، كان انطباعي الأول عن كوالالمبور سلبيا... خاصة أنها كمدينة، لا تعد بجمال، تطور أو نظافة مدن سنغافورة. ولذلك اعتقدت أن الأيام التي سأقضيها في كوالامبور ستكون مزرية، إلى أن زرت كهوف باتو خارج المدينة في اليوم التالي... وأفضل ما في الأمر، أن الوصول إليها كان سهلاً، سريعاً وغير مكلف عبر مترو كوالالمبور

تعدّ كهوف باتو معلماً دينياً هاماً للهندوسيين الذين بنوا معابداَ وأصناماً فيها، وهو مزار سنوي لاحتفالاتهم والذي يعتبر نوعاً من الحج وخاصة بصعود ما يقارب الثلاثمئة درجة للوصول إلى قمة الجبل والكهف الرئيسي... هناك، تكونون على مقربة لرؤية ما يميز هذه الكهوف: تشكيلة الصخور الجيرية والتي يبلغ عمرها نحو (400) مليووووون سنة، وذلك أقدم حتى من عمر زمن الديناصورات! كانت هذه التجربة فعلا مميزة، وكانت حسن الختام لزيارتي في كوالالمبور قبل أن أتوجه إلى جزيرة لانكاوي حيث استقبلتني صديقتي جوني لتكون دليلي السياحي ونبدأ جولتنا في الجزيرة على دراجة السكوتر الممتعة

الجزيرة صغيرة ولكنها مليئة بالنشاطات الممتعة والمناظر الخلابة... ذكرتني كثيراً بسريلانكا، إذ يتشابهان بالطبيعة الاستوائية الجميلة والأرياف البسيطة الساحرة. بعد جولة قصيرة في ارجاء الجزيرة، قررت أن يكون أول نشاط لي هو جولة المانجروف البحرية! تقع غابة المانجروف في منطقة صخرية ساحرة من الأحجار الجيرية البارزة وفيها العديد من الجداول المائية والصخور المستترة والتي تعد موطنًا للعديد والعديد من أدغال الحياة البرية بكائناتها المتنوعة.nnومن بين أكثر هذه الحيوانات والطيور إثارة هي نسور البحر العملاقة التي تتخذ من المنحدرات الصخرية العليا أعشاشًا لها، وأكثر ما يميز جولة المانجروف هذه هو إطعام النسور، إذ يلقي سائق المراكب الطعام في الماء وينتظر حتى تحوم النسور حول القارب في شكل دوائر وتلتهم غداءها.nnومن بين الأنشطة التي يمكن القيام بها أثناء هذه الجولة التجول بالأدغال سيرًا على الأقدام واستكشاف الكهوف وزيارة القرى وممارسة السباحة في موجات المد المرتفعة والرحلات الاستكشافية للحياة النباتية والحيوانية بغابات المانجروف. /المصدر

بعد انتهائنا من الجولة الرائعة، بدأت الأمطار تهطل علينا فقررنا أن نتوقف عند منتزه الحيوانات البرية والطيور لتمضية الوقت بانتظار انقضاء المطر، وأنا شخصياً أتحمس لرؤية الحيوانات! يؤوي المنتزه العديد من الحيوانات والطيور الأليفة كالببغاء، الأرانب، الفلامينغو، الفأر-الغزال، الطاووس، الكناري وغيرها والتي تحوم بحرية داخله. لا أستطيع أن أصف التجربة على أنها ممتازة أو متميزة، فهي بالتأكيد لا تقارن بحديقة الحيوانات في سنغافورة، ولكنها قد تكون تجربة ممتعة للعائلات مع أطفالهم وخاصة أن هناك حديقة لإطعام طيورالكناري ولمداعبة الحيوانات الأليفة... لا تتوقعوا أن تقضوا أكثر من ساعة ونصف في هذا المنتزه، توجهوا بعدها لتكتشفوا الأطايب العدة المتواجدة على الجزيرة! أكثر ما استمتعت به هو السوق المحلي المفتوح حيث يجتمع أهل البلدة ليعرضوا الأكلات والعصائر اللذيذة المحلية، من أطيبها كانت فطائر البانكيك التي تحضّر بخلطتهم المميزة، وكرات ناجتس الدجاج على السيخ، وبعض العصائر الممزوجة بالشاي، الفواكه والأزهار... ولكن من ألذ ما أكلت كان الطعام الصيني في مطعم "تيو للمأكولات البحرية" حيث تذوقت للمرة الأولى الأخطبوط المقلي المغطى بمزيج بيض البط

الجميل في الجزيرة أن فيها الأحياء الشعبية البسيطة، فيها الأحياء الراقية حيث هناك مرسى لليخوت، فيها الحقول الخضراء والأدغال الكثيفة، كما فيها البلدات السياحية المليئة بالمطاعم، المقاهي ومجمع تجاري بسيط... ولكن أكثر ما تشتهر فيه الجزيرة هو طبعاً شواطئها الخلابة، برمالها البيضاء، ميائها الزرقاء الكريستالية، والأدغال الكثيفة المحيطة بها... فبإمكانكم الاسترخاء والاستمتاع براحة أو ممارسة بعض الألعاب والرياضات المائية كركوب الجت سكي، التزحلق على الماء، أو إن لم يكن لديكم خوف من المرتفعات: الطيران بالمظلة فوق ضفاف الجزيرة... وهذا بالظبط ما فعلته في اليوم الثاني لي على الجزيرة! مع أنني جربت الطيران الشراعي من قبل في جورجيا، ولكن التجربة كانت جداً مختلفة فوق البحر... وبهذه المغامرة الرائعة أنهيت زيارتي في لنكاوي الجميلة وتوجهت إلى المطار لأعود إلى كوالالمبور

وفي يومي الأخير في ماليزيا، قررت أن أزور ولاية مالاكا إذ سمعت الكثير عنها... فبدأت رحلتي من كوالالمبور، والتي استغرقت أكثر من ساعتين للوصول إلى البلدة الرئيسية في مالاكا، وكنت في سباق مع الوقت إذ كان لدي فقط بضع ساعات قبل أن أعود إلى كوالالمبور لرحلة الإياب. ولكن ما كنت لأفوّت فرصة زيارة مالاكا التي تعرف بالولاية التاريخية لوجود العديد من المعالم والآثار التاريخية الهامة فيها... وأول ما سيلفت انتباهكم عند الوصول إلى الساحة الرئيسية للبلدة هو محيط كنيسة المسيح والتي تم انشاءها في عهد الاستعمار الهولندي في أواسط القرن السابع عشر ودهنت باللون الأحمر الحميمي في بداية القرن التاسع عشر. وخلال تجوالكم في أنحاء البلدة ستجدون العديد من المعالم المتبقية من الحضارات التي مرّت على الولاية كالبرتغالية، الهولندية، والصينية مثلاً. بعد انتهائكم من جولتكم التاريخية، مرّوا بالحيّ الصيني للتسوق وتذوق بعض الأطايب، وعند خروجكم منه عليكم بركوب إحدى الدراجات الثلاثية المزخرفة في جولة حول ضفاف النهر للاستمتاع بالمناظر الجميلة

وإن كانت لديكم الجرأة على تجربة شيء جديد ومثير، فعليكم بلعبة "الهروب من الغرفة" حيث لديكم ساعة واحدة فقط لاختبار قواتكم الذهنية في حل الألغاز واكتشاف الأدلة في أنحاء الغرفة المقفلة لإيجاد رمز فتح القفل... هي ليست سهلة ولكن جداً ممتعة، خاصة إن كنتم مجموعة وتحبون التحدي

FlyDubai to Georgia - Tbilisi

We started our Georgia journey by arriving in Tbilisi, so it's only natural that we end it in Tbilisi as well. After our day excursion in Kakheti, we headed to settle down in Tbilisi for the next 3 nights, explored around, and had all sorts of fun!

The capital of Georgia is a living breathing piece of history; having been destroyed and built over 29 times, it is layered with the old, the renovated, and the modern... And we got to see a beautiful overview of it from Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel where we were staying, as you can see below from the balcony of the hotel's restaurant, which overlooks Mtkvari river.

Stepping out of the hotel, you get to one of the main streets where you can enjoy shopping from international brands, as well as local brands, artisan/souvenirs shops, and even a flea market full of traditional Georgian arts & crafts... All that in the midst of beautiful architecture, in avenues that are very European; but rest assured, the prices aren't too European, i.e. things aren't expensive, unless you're aiming for expensive things, so it's much like Saudi. For example, I bought comfy shoes that were only for 9 Georgian Laris = 20 SR (Thank you, China lol). In some stores such as Zara and Parfois, items were even cheaper than in Saudi.

If you do not visit Tbilisi for the shopping and architecture, then you might do so for the food and restaurants/cafes. Their cuisine is quite close to Mediterranean, with an apparent affinity to mushroom for some reason. There are a few halal restaurants in the city that you can enjoy with peace of mind, like the Iranian restaurant "Gruzbek", and the Lebanese restaurant "Amira". While in other places, like Tsiskvili, you can enjoy the food with the view (seen in my photo below), the atmosphere and a traditional local show with music (You can see that in my video here). 

But the coolest place to eat in Tbilisi, and also chill, is anywhere in the Old Town, known as Altstadt, which looks like a cozy version of Beirut Solidere/Souks, more like Jbeil Souk, and if you aren't familiar with either places in Lebanon, then it just means that it's a pretty nice branch of streets where you can walk around, or sit in cafes/restaurants. The Old Town is rich with historical churches, monuments, and traditional trades such as jewelry making, and I was lucky to come across ladies fixing and restoring old rugs in a business their family has owned for generations.

The city offers many attractions that are only a few minutes apart; making it ideal for a city walk, and when you want a break from walking, you can take the aerial tramway, across the Bridge of Peace, to enjoy a breathtaking view of the city from atop (which is the view you see in the first photo of this post. Neat, huh!). To truly explore the city, and take your time enjoying it, you'll need about 3 to 4 days, especially if you included a "hammam" in your excursion, and you should! 

And when you've had enough of city excursions, you can always take a trip outside the city, to the countryside, where you'll find stunning nature of mountains, rivers, and green fields. You'll also many historical sites to visit, monasteries on top of hills, that look like castles, where you can pretend to be in Game of Thrones :P haha

And if it's adventure and thrill you seek, then you won't be disappointed either... There are many thrilling activities to do around the country such as rafting and other various water sports, rock climbing, caving & cave diving, and paragliding... So I chose to end my amazing journey in Georgia by doing something I've wanted to do for so long and I finally had the chance to!

Thanks to FlyDubai, and their travel agent Voyager, I had an amazing time in Georgia packed with beauty and fun.
